Job Definitions

Advertising

Advertising is the world of paid persuasive communications that reach consumers through the mass media. Advertising jobs have a message to convey to the public. To do that effectively requires an understanding of who the public is, how members of the target market think and what language, images, ideas, and words they are most likely to respond to.

Business

An English major's reading and comprehension skills, coupled with the ability to write clearly and concisely, are major assets in the business world. Research papers give us the skills needed to compile data and use it in a meaningful way. Employees who can write memos and other documents are in large demand.

Creative Writing

Creative writing is the work of those who write from their own inspiration. It is not simply limited to novelists, but can include lyricists, songwriters, poets, etc. Most of these writers have something they feel strongly about and wish to express it to the world, be it through song, verse, or prose. While there are some employers out there, creative writers often work freelance, meaning they are self-employed, and will find another "day job" to help support themselves.

Editing

Editors make the important decisions about what stays and what goes in a piece of published writing. They must be able to make decisions, be comfortable with these decisions, and stick to them. They provide guidance and oversee the creation and processing of a printed product while keeping in mind what is appropriate for publication.

Public Relations

Public relations is the function of an organization that seeks to maintain good relations with any number of "publics" it must interact with doing business. Public relation officials seek not only to understand the points of view of groups who have issues with their operation, but also to have these groups understand their point of view on the concerns they may hold particularly important.

Reporting

This line of work attracts applicants because it is challenging, ever-changing, and fast paced. Reporters are ahead of the game. They know what's going on before the general public. It is a reporters responsibility to communicating the news and informing the populace.

Researching

Research provides the framework for many written works and can be an essential part of the outline for particular projects. It utilizes the training we undergo in college; writing, critical judgment and investigative skills that have been developed through analytical and research paper writing. Most writing - even fiction - needs research support.

Teaching

Teaching requires not only a passion for English, but a desire to educate. A successful educator not only understands the subject they teach, but is aware of the unique needs and esteems of their students. Grading is an added difficulty for teachers, as it is often subjective. Enthusiasm is needed in educating young students and grasping their attention.

Technical Writing

Technology has a huge impact on people’s lives. Without technology, the speed in which people can communicate is reduced. People rely on communication and the use of words to understand the world around them. We need interpreters –“Technical writers” for the new technological terms that are going to be evolving for the use of communicating, teaching, and writing.
